My family is driving down today for the Mother’s Day holiday. Tomorrow I have to events outside the house – a birthday party for one of CootieBoy’s daycare/church pals, and an Etsy craft meetup. I’m looking forward to both.
My family is staying through Monday, which is nice. I would have hated for them to drive down 6 hours just for one full day’s visit.
In other news (TMI coming up for the remainder of this paragraph – for non TMI stuff, see below this paragraph), I have an absess on the back of my leg. It started coming up yesterday morning and by last night it was huge and hurt really badly. To the point where standing and sitting caused a great deal of pain. I was able to clean it out a little bit, but this morning the pain was so unbearable that I could hardly walk. So on my lunch hour I ran to the grocery store and picked up some of those icy/hot bandages, some turmeric and chocolate milk. The icy/hot patch is a very weird sensation, but the pain has lessened a lot since I put it on an hour ago. I only mildly wince when I move now, whereas before it was not just winceing but groans and VERY slow movements. I’m still walking slowly, but not as slow as earlier today. The turmeric is a natural remedy I read about online. I had planned on giving it to CootieGirl should her bumps ever come back, but they never did. But since I now have one, I figured I’d let myself be the guinea pig. So I mixed one teaspoon of turmeric with 2 cups of chocolate milk (one guy online swore that I wouldn’t taste the turmeric in the chocolate milk). I swallowed it down in two gulps because I knew if I did it slowly I wouldn’t finish it. I have to say that while drinking it, it wasn’t terrible, but the aftertaste was pretty bad. Fortunately a piece of bread was all I needed to get rid of that taste in my mouth. The turmeric is supposed to help reduce swelling and break up the infection. The website (and the 100s of testimonials that have been submitted there) said I should see a noticable difference within 24-48 hours if I take 3 teaspoons of turmeric a day.
I’m very tired today. I fell asleep on the sofa at some point while watching TV and woke up at 2 a.m. That would have been fine, except for the fact that I remembered only then that I had to make some changes to my mom’s files for the printer. So I hopped on the computer and spent 30 minutes making those changes and then went to bed.
CootieBoy once again slept the whole night in his own bed, and required Denis to go in and wake him up to get ready for daycare. As Denis said, “That fan is the best purchase we’ve ever made.”
Okay, that’s it for me – what plans do you have for Mother’s Day weekend?
Update at 4:33 p.m. – more inside the post on my TMI topic from earlier today.
It hurts like all get out now. I think the effect of icy/hot patch is wearing off, so I’ve put on a new one. And it has gotten REALLY swollen and red this afternoon. Arg. I know it has to get worse before it gets better, but dang. It’s painful. Fortunately, everyone at work thinks I hurt my back, and I’m not correcting their misconception.
And I’m very swirly in the head right now. I don’t know if it’s from the menthol in the ice/hot patch (which is minimal, but more than I’ve had in 10 years), or if it’s from the teaspoon of turmeric that I had earlier today. But I find that my mental state is a bit…Grateful Deadish, if you get my obvious meaning.
i agree about the fan! we use one with our daughter and it has been a life saver… i can creep around her room at night to put away laundry, and my husband can get ready for work in the morning without worrying about her waking (our house is TINY). white noise is the best!!
Not to preach or anything, but you have an infection! You really need antibiotics and then lots of soaking in hot water to get it to open up so it can drain. I would worry that the icy/hot patch, which only feels hot, is not helping get to the root of the infection. Of course, I’ve never tried turmeric so what do I know, but I’m worried about all of your symptoms being a sign that the infection could be moving into your blood.
Gwynne – I’ve decided to go to an urgent care doctor first thing in the morning (like 5 a.m.) and get the absess drained and get antibiotics. I started getting a fever tonight during dinner, and just not feeling well. Add to that – I found another absess that will need treatment. So, not to worry – I AM seeing a doctor in about 6 hours! But first – some sleep!
Gwynee, I tried to get her to go to the doctor the other day, but it took the infection worsening to get her to go. Thanks for the medical advice. You can be her mommy any time you like. Glad to her she’s going at least. Shes afraid of doctors more than I am. She’ll deny that though. Hope they drain her abscesses and she feels well again right quickly.
Jaynee, I’m relieved to hear that! 🙂 I hope you get some quick relief. Our daughters have had their share of boils (most recently one the size of a softball(!!) on the butt and and while the doctor didn’t lance it, the hot soaking opened it up quickly…another time we had to go to the emergency room for a proper lancing). The antibiotics will keep it from spreading. Hope you’re feeling better real soon!
