We Now Have TWO Teen Drivers

Remember back in March when I bought a new-used car using the Boy’s savings and thought for sure that it would be the inspiration to get CootieBoy to get his license?  Well, that never happened.  And then remember how in my last post I mentioned that he failed his learner’s permit test a couple weeks ago?  I have an update (for which you already know the result if you read the title of this post)!

Last night we sat down with the printout of the SC driver’s manual.  I had gone through and highlighted the main topics I thought might be on the written test.  SC has an online practice test, which he was regularly passing, but there was a lot of content that the online test didn’t cover, so that’s what I focused on in the manual.  For about 20 minutes or so we speed-studied all of my highlighted items.  Truly, it was a super-high level run-through.

This morning I took time off from work and we headed over to the DMV and got him checked in for the written test.  And this time…he PASSED!  You are allowed to miss 6 questions, and he only missed 3.  I could see he was really relieved when he came out from the testing area. A few minutes later he walked out with a permit in his hand.

I promptly drove him over to a large empty parking lot (after taking him to Starbucks for a celebratory hot cocoa). We spent 10 minutes reviewing everything on the dashboard of the car, and how to set his mirrors, seat and steering wheel so that he’d be comfortable.  Then we spent another 20 minutes or so driving around the parking lot, letting him get a feel for the gas, brake and steering wheel.  He did a GREAT job.

And so now it begins – for the next six months I’ll be taking him out a few times a week to learn how to drive.  In October or November I’ll get him signed up for driver’s ed so that he can get his 8 hours of driving in with them, and at the end of February 2021, with any luck he’ll be able to get his license.

And at THAT point I’ll need to start shopping for a car because once he gets his license, his car is officially his and I have nothing to drive myself (do you think he’d let me rent it back from him until June or July 2021 so that I can wait a year before I have to buy a car?).

I feel old now. I remember reading your blog when he was born. Where did the time go?!? Congratulations to CootieBoy!

Congratulations! Time moves so quickly – one day their toddlers and all of a sudden they are in high school and driving! I’m smiling because after driving with 5 kids, it’s an experience I’m glad is over. None were terrible drivers but each had some issue — too close to cars, turning too sharp and taking out a bush, running over a cinderblock in the street (just thought it was a bag or something) and miss judging parking and bumping off curbs. Thrilling times!😬😂

Driving over a cinderblock! Oh my! I can’t even imagine the damage that caused. Fortunately, CG is a pretty good driver, and I suspect CB will end up being a decent driver as well.
