Visiting Amelia Island in Winter

I have to admit that I have no intention of traveling in the winter since we’ve been enjoying weather in the mid-70s over the past week. However, I bet if I still lived in NoNJ I’d be begging for a vacation in early 2008 to someplace sunny and warm and completely devoid of anything resembling snow.

Enter the Amelia Island Tourist Development Council, who is offering a Lodging Special consisting of a 3rd night free when you stay two nights at any one of 12 resorts, hotels or B&Bs offering this special. Sounds like a nice little getaway, doesn’t it? The offer is good from now through February 29, 2008. With weather temps average in the upper 50s during the months of January and February, it could be perfect for those northerners who have no interest in skiing or storing up their groceries in case three feet of snow fall one night.

Not familiar with Amelia Island? It was once a vibrant, Victorian seaport village, with a charming downtown at Fernandina Beach. Fortunately it escaped the 20th Century commercialization and still boasts a beautiful 50-block historic district with many original mansions and cottages dating back to the late 19th century. Amelia Island is great for hobbyists – birdwatchers, kayaking, sailing and fishing are all available. But there is also great shopping, historical tours of the Island, and even a group that provides Island tours that take place on Segways!

So if you want a quiet, easy, and relatively cheap getaway weekend this winter, consider going to Amelia Island and take advantage of the 3rd-night-free program they are offering through February 29, 2008.
