As some may have noticed in our Cootie Calendar, Denis and I have an upcoming trip to Memphis and Nashville. I spent part of yesterday planning things to do while we’re visiting those cities, but I’d love to hear from those of you who have been there – what do you recommend?
We’ll do some of the obvious things: visit Opryland, visit Graceland, tour a couple historic homes, and hang out in a couple bars to hear the live music. I’ve made reservations at a restaurant in Memphis (Cielo) and we plan on getting together with friends one night for dinner in Nashville. We’ll definitely seek out the antique/art gallery area of each city – we love buying at least one piece of art from whatever city we visit.
Any other ideas? Bear in mind that while in Memphis the bulk of our time will be spent at the World Championship BBQ Festival, which is the reason we are going in the first place.
Opryland is no longer open. In fact, it was ripped down and replaced with a huge mall named Opry Mills. It’s a decent mall as far as malls go, but, well, you know, it’s a Mall.
The Opryland Hotel is still there, and is worth a few hours of your time. (You can take a boat ride inside the hotel. It’s huge.)
I’ll plan on putting together a list of the places we often visited while living in Nashville!
Thanks for the clarification, Angie! I did mean the Opryland Hotel – not Opryland. I’ve read a lot about Opry Mills and plan on AVOIDING that area!
I live in Memphis, so if you have any questions, feel free to ask!
I LOVE both cities, especially Memphis. I’m actually in the process of attempting to move there 🙂 Graceland is a definite must, in my opinion. It’s lots of fun and one of those things you should say you’ve done. I went on a week day, about an hour before the last tour was ran (even though you can stay until midnight or something) which was great because there were no crowds and we could take our time. Have fun, I’m incredibly jealous!!!!
