Uh…Did *I* Do That?

Last night I got to the gym around 8:45 p.m. and promptly hopped onto the treadmill and began my walk. There was only one other person there, a woman who was also on a treadmill. At about 9 p.m. Wendy pulled up, so I went over to the locked front door and let her in. I had done this on Sunday morning and so I didn’t even give a thought about it.

About thirty seconds after I locked the door behind Wendy, the alarm sounded.

I got a mean look from the woman on the treadmill, and I immediately realized that even though I opened the door from the inside, the alarm only knows that the door was opened after hours. Oops.

But what was strange was that the alarm sounded for a good fifteen minutes. In the meantime a couple other women showed up to do some weight training, and yet no police car came. When the alarm first started I called the owner’s phone number to try and let him know what was going on, and it just went into the gym’s voicemail. The alarm finally cut off completely after fifteen minutes. Finally, about five minutes later, the owner walked in. “I am SO sorry,” I began. He got a confused look on his face. “I’m the one that set off the alarm – I let Wendy in through that door not knowing it had an alarm.” With that he got a perturbed look on his face and said that when he or his son are not around, the alarms are basically always on.

I apologized again, and a few minutes later Wendy and I discussed the fact that on Sunday, when I was the ONLY one at the gym at 7 a.m., I let Wendy in through that very same door, and no alarm went off at all. So I’m a little confused on that one.

Either way, I plan on calling the owner today to let him know that he should be concerned about the alarm since no cops came (and supposedly the system is tied into the police station), and that the alarm didn’t go off on Sunday.

In any event, I did 70 minutes on the treadmill last night.
