I loved this show last summer, I think once they get rid of the 5-6 really bad people I’ll love “Rock Star” again this summer. Last night’s 90 minute premiere was fun – because I love Dave Navarro. LOVE him. Because even though he’s super-pretentious you can’t help but like him. And Brooke Burke obviously thought she didn’t need to take any classes entitled “How to be an interesting host” despite her miserable job last year.
Let’s dig in and discuss the contestants, and I’ll make my top female pick and my top male pick based on last night’s performances.
Chris – Oh my. This guy was horrendous. He performed near the end of the show and was just AWFUL. He did a cover of “Roxanne” by the police and was basically out of tune the ENTIRE song. It was like he tried to sing an alternative melody, but it just did NOT work. He’ll definitely be in the bottom three.
Dana – She did a decent job. But she won’t win. Any woman who claims in a heavy Southern accent, “That was my first plane ride EVER!” cannot be the lead singer of a band that has members of Metallica, Motley Crue and Guns n Roses.
Dilana – Wow. Just WOW. Her attitude stinks (hello, JD Fortune!) but her rendition of Nirvana’s “Lithium” was downright electric. And based on her vibe she’d be a good fit with the guys.
Jenny – She was just okay for me – kinda pitchy. She won’t win, but she’ll definitely be around until the final 10 because there are worst contestants than her.
Jill – She was good. She did a Janis Joplin cover and she was like a cross between Shakira and Taylor Dane. Good voice and if she can make her look a bit more rock and a bit less “This is what Janis would look like if she was sexy” I think she could do quite well.
Josh – Denis didn’t like this guy, but I did. He did a Black Crowes cover which suited his voice perfectly. Is he rock enough to front Supernova? Probably not – but if he can make it to the Top 5 I can see him getting a record deal from SOMEone out there in Musicland.
Lukas – The final performer of the night, he did Billy Idol’s “Rebel Yell”. I don’t like him much – the song was too low for him, but I can see how he’d be a good fit for the band. He has that wild man “is he on drugs or just crazy?” vibe that the band might go for.
Magni – poor guy. Iceland’s most famous rocker, and not a good performance for him at all. He’ll definitely be in the bottom three, so no use going further.
Matt – the former real estate salesman turned rocker. He was just BORING. That was his main problem. Completely forgettable. He’ll be out pretty soon.
Patrice – A solid performer, but maybe too polished for Supernova. She has a great voice and is obviously comfortable performing. Won’t make Supernova but will possibly make the Top 5 if she keeps up with good performances.
Phil – poor guy. You know a performance isn’t going to be good if the guy’s voice messes up on the first line of the song. He attempted “Cult of Personality” by Living Colour and he just isn’t big enough to carry that song. Won’t make top ten.
Ryan – I didn’t care for Ryan much, but there were so many other bad performances on last night’s show that he doesn’t have to worry. This week.
Storm – LOVED her. Great energy, good charisma on stage, and a talented singer. She sang first last night and started off the show with a fantastic performance. Keep an eye on this one – she’ll be in the Top 5 for sure.
Toby – I loved this guy. The Aussie is nice to look at, but also enjoyable to listen to. He did “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door” which was bold considering that one of the guys from Supernova already did that song. But Toby was wise to do an acoustic version that worked very nicely. Denis didn’t like Toby, but I liked him a lot.
Zayra – Ugh. I was shocked by how bad her performance was. I can only presume she has amazing charisma in person because I didn’t see it last night and was surprised over how much the guys gushed about her performance. She gets a pass this week, but she just might be out next week if she doesn’t do better.
My top male pick: Toby
Who Supernova will probably pick: Lukas
My top female pick: Dilana
Who Supernova will probably pick: Dilana
WOW did you nail this on the head or what. i missed the premier, but caught the rest of the shows this summer except one or two. My sister hooked me on it when I back home in Chicago area visiting my family and I had forced her to watch My fair brady finale and the shows leading up to it 🙂 I love Adrianne spunkiness.
I just found you read a few of your blogs, and I enjoyed this series as well. I adore Storm, and hope to see her sign a deal soon. reading this made me smile… this fall Lineup of TV shows as my tivo working overtime for me to find more Favorites. Would love to discuss.

Hey I had forgotten about this post outlining my predictions for the series! I’d say I did pretty well choosing the top three on premiere night! =)
