TV: American Idol – The Final Seven

I’m not a big fan of Ms. Mimi, Mariah Carey, but I was surprised at how good the show was in general.

David Archuleta – My kids love “the Moses movie,” as they call the movie whose theme song David sang. It’s a good song, but he was merely ok. WAY too many runs in that song and not enough SINGING. I was glad when the song was over. Also glad that I have the original version on my MP3 player to help me remember what a good song that normally is.

Carly Smithson – So this isn’t an original Mariah song – it’s actually from the 1970s, and I have to tell you that I didn’t compare Carly to Mariah, but to Kelly Clarkson, who also sang this during her season. I laughed when Carly did one particular run THE EXACT SAME WAY KELLY DID IT (and I know this because I have the Kelly version on my MP3 player). It was one of her better performances, but may not be enough to keep her from the bottom three this week.

Kristi Lee Cook – Do I know this song? Was it ever on the radio? I didn’t know this song. I liked the MODESTLY country tone they put to it. It suited Kristy Lee very nicely.

Syesha Mercado – Okay, so this is the ONLY song by Mariah Carey that I love. It’s from her first album and it’s a BEAUTIFULLY AMAZING song (yep, it’s on my MP3 player). And Syesha did a WONDERFUL version of it. Just as good but slightly different and just amazing. This one is up there along with her Beatles song that rocked. Loved it.

David Cook – Denis didn’t like this song very much, but I thought it was fantastic. He made a Mariah song into a wonderfully mellow rock song. And to have his brother (who is reportedly dying of cancer) in the audience when Simon had only GOOD things to say probably is the cause of his welling up once judging was over. That, and realizing how AWFULLY BAD he was last week and how he should have gone home instead of Michael Johns.

Brooke White – TMeh. She lets her nerves take over when she plays the piano, and it’s distracting. I did like the way the band did NOT come in halfway through, but she should have let someone else play the piano. Brooke, we know you can play – there’s no need to keep doing it when you get too nervous doing it.

Jason Castro – Aw, isn’t he sweet? I love this kid. I love his folksy renditions of songs, even when they are cheesy Mariah songs.

Bottom three? Carly, Brooke and Syesha.
Going home? Syesha, which is a shame since this was one of her best performances of the season.

This week I agree with about half of what you said. David A. blew me away–his vocals and just his musical sensibilities in general are WAY beyond his years and his boyish looks. I disagreed with the judges and think David C. STUNK–I don’t like his style of music but I have to admit he’s been pretty good. This one, IMO, was done so poorly I could hardly listen. I’m sad for Syesha–she’s GORGEOUS and she can sing, but there’s something that says to me she just doesn’t want this badly enough. I totally agree with your bottom 3 (so does DialIdol) but I think it could be Brooke leaving us this week…

I’m glad someone agrees with me about David Cook. He was drowned out by the band for most of the song and it sounded like one long note to me. And his head is huge. That’s all I can notice now. When he was standing next to Ryan, his head had to be at least twice the size of his.

Yes, Brooke must go. I’m tired of her weepiness. She is always on the verge of crying.

Well, kind of a surprise tonight! I THINK this is the first time that anyone predicted by DialIdol to be safe has been voted off!

I didn’t watch Syesha, but I heard her and she sounded terrible. I love that song she sang and she sounded off key through most of it to me. I expected her to go home.

Here’s my thinking on David A – he’s boring. Every week he sings the same song – middle of the road tempo, message song that shows his voice to its best. That is all well and good but an album of MOR songs will not sell well because it will be boring. He needs to attempt up tempo songs and something that’s just fun instead of always searching for some message. He’s got a great voice, but I’m bored with him.

David C – I didn’t think he sounded that great this week. I did like the arrangement of the song, but he just didn’t sound that great to me.
