TV: AI8 – What’s With The Shouting?

I had a headache at the end of AI8 last night, because I felt like I had been yelled at for two hours straight. For a Top 13 that is supposed to be uber-talented, what a disappointing night. Maybe I’m just still bitter that Ricky Braddy didn’t make it in.

Lil Rounds, “The Way You Make Me Feel”: She was okay but I didn’t think it was particuarly terrific. I thought it was quite bland, actually.

Scott MacIntyre, “Keep the Faith”: I’m not a big Scott fan but I LOVED his song last night. It was very Elton-John-in-the-early-1970s, of which I’m a huge fan. His singing wasn’t strong at all, but his performance overall was fantastic.

Danny Gokey, “PYT”:Why did he have to YELL his song? Because let’s be honest – he shouted that thing from beginning to end (other than his little fakeout mellow start). It was at this point that I felt a twinge of pain in my head. Don’t think he shouted it? Go find it online and watch again.

Michael Sarver, “You Are Not Alone”: Boring!! Nice guy, but boring. He stole Ricky Braddy’s spot.

Jasmine Murray, “I’ll Be There”: This is when I realized that every song was going to be overprocessed and over the top. This was another shouting song and I’ll admit that I fast-forwarded through the second half of the song because I just couldn’t take it anymore. Do these contestants not believe in nuance?

Kris Allen, “Remember the Time”: Heh. I wouldn’t have brought the wife out this early either. Teenyboppers don’t vote for the guy they can’t imagine meeting and winning the heart of. And they can’t imagine winning the heart of Kris Allen because he just got married. I thought the same thing (and said as much to Denis) but I still thought it was tacky for Simon to say it out loud. Despite this, I thought Kris did a decent job. However, his guitar was TOTALLY unnecessary (and upon closer inspection it looked like it was probably turned down because the acoustic guitar playing during the song did not match his strumming at all).

Allison Iraheta, “Give Into Me”: *sigh* More shouting. When will it end?

Anoop Desai, “Beat It”: That was just…painful.

Jorge Nunez, “Never Can Say Goodbye”: To randomly quote Randy Jackson, “Yeah, no, not good.”

Megan Joy, “Rockin’ Robin”: Wow. Of ALL the Jackson songs on the planet, you chose this one? Seriously? This was atrocious.

Adam Lambert, “Black or White”: Where’s my Motrin? I need 1,000 mg, stat. I liked his initial audition very much, because he reined it in. But when Adam Lambert goes full-on tilt I can’t stand him. CAN’T. STAND. HIM.

Matt Giraud, “Human Nature”: I really liked Matt, and that’s one of my least favorite MJ songs.

Alexis Grace, “Dirty Diana”: I didn’t even recognize this song until she went into the chorus. I thought she did a decent job but she, like just about everyone else, got a bit shouty by the end.

As for making picks, I have none. Seriously – this is the first time in eight seasons that I’m not rooting for a single contestant. Call me bitter if you want, but there are 3-4 contestants that, based on last night’s performances, should not be there while Ricky Braddy sits at home wondering what happened. Maybe in a couple weeks someone will become a contestant I can cheer for, but right now I’m not seeing it.

Yeah, I still have my headache today.

I can’t stand Adam either. I really was shocked that the judges liked that performance because I thought it was terrible.

Okay, LOL, I think both of you are now officially old. Or are now in the older generation class. I had to press ‘mute’ several times. Your critiques are in line with mine but, what did you expect with a Michael Jackson night?

What was it that Randy said at the end of the show that was mixed up? We both heard it and quoted it. I think it could become a regular saying.

Denis: “That was a well job done” or something like that.

And no, Marmie, it’s not that I’m old (see my love of David Cook last season that induced me to actually go see the Idol tour live). I think Adam is just too over the top – he sings like those old hair bands from the 1980s – and I HATED hair bands in the 1980s!!

Yes, it was pretty loud last night. You might not have a favorite to cheer yet, but I am sure you have an opinion on the two who should go home tonight ;).

Well, I’m presuming the new change to the show is that (like “So You Think You Can Dance,” which is produced by the same people), the JUDGES are now going to decide who goes home once the bottom three perform a “sing off” tonight. If that’s the case, then I see Jorge going home tonight. He’ll definitely be in the bottom three, and the judges don’t seem to like him much despite putting him into the Top 36.

I think Jorge will be one of the ones to go home too. He definitely was weak. I thought it was a double elimination tonight and that two will be packing their bags.

You are correct – two are going home. I’ll tap Allison and Jasmine as the other two in the bottom.
