Theater: Spamalot

Holy cow was this play funny. My family came into town this weekend and all six of us went to see the matinee show of Monty Python’s Spamalot on Saturday. Denis and I had balcony seats (front row) while my parents, sister & BIL had orchestra seats. From the minute the curtain went up I was laughing at this extremely irreverent hilarious show.

You have to love any Broadway show that makes fun of Broadway shows (see: The Producers). A few times the actors cracked themselves up, which is fun to see. David Hyde Pierce and Hank Azaria were wickedly funny, and Simon Russell Beale, who played King Arthur, was perfect in the role. I told Jen that I can’t imagine Tim Curry (who was in the role until recently) would have been – he’s such a smarmy (but awesome) actor that it would have changed the whole tone of the character.

The play had a lot of original Python bits in it – cows, the French, rabbits and Knight who say Ni, but it also had a lot of new stuff that was just killer. Let me just say The Lady of the Lake was my favorite part of the show.

A must-see, people.

Hank Azaria is quite a versatile guy…he’s very funny, I think. So glad you had a good time, after waiting so long to seeit!! 🙂
