The Festival That Almost Wasn’t

So we headed to a sleepy little town called Cheraw today for a spring festival. We had never been to that section of SC and figured we’d give it a shot. It took almost two hours to get there, and we were VERY worried when we pulled into the downtown area – it looked like there was not much going on.

We parked the car and started walking around – the kids each had a hot dog and played on the inflatables there. We saw a camel. We petted some farm animals (the black cow was particularly sweet). Then we decided to walk down the block in search of BBQ. There was nothing going on, but we eventually came upon a church group and snapped up two BBQ combos. It was YUMMY. They told us that we should keep walking down the main drag because the “main part” of the festival was further on. So we kept walking.

We came upon several pieces of furniture outside an antique shop, including an old-time wooden school desk. Ooohhhh….I loved that desk. There was no tag on it, but the owner of the shop saw me caressing the desk and came out to tell me he was selling it for $65. I was shocked by the price – I figured it would be over $100 easy. I told him I’d think about it, and we continued walking.

Sure enough, a couple more blocks and we came to the town green that had a bandstand and TONS of food vendors. We checked out a small flea market type set up as well as a small art gallery (focus on “small”). We tried to find the guy making balloon animals for the kids and couldn’t, so we headed back towards the car. We passed the antique guy’s shop and I went in and offered $50. They said no way. I wasn’t going to go any higher, and I figured that after chatting them up a bit and then walking out that they’d rather take the sale than not. But nope – they didn’t chase me, and I didn’t get the desk. I only had $54 in cash on me, so it’s not like I could have gone much higher in price, but I do wish they had sold it to me. It was in GREAT condition. They gave me their business card in case I changed my mind, but seeing as they are two hours away I doubt I’ll be heading back.

We reached the car and headed home. On the way CootieBoy asked if we could watch “Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith” again, and so that’s on the TV right now as we type.

It’s a beautiful day, and while the festival itself was just okay – nothing special – it was nice to get outside for a couple of hours. Made me wish our neighborhood pool would open early so that we can take advantage of days like this.
