I made a momentous decision this morning.
I’m not coloring my hair anymore.
Now, for my average reader that’s no big deal, but to those that know me well, it probably comes as a shock. I’ve been coloring my hair for over 20 years. And for at least 15 of those years I’ve been doing it myself at home. I’ve been red, blonde, brunette, deep purple and all shades in between. A couple years ago I colored my hair four different colors in four months. I LOVE changing my hair color. But this morning, I looked in the mirror and I saw that I’m turning silver. It’s not a sprinkling of silver in my hair, but rather a small section of it around my temples. And I know it’ll sound weird, but I’m thrilled.
I’ve always loved women who allow themselves to have their natural grey hair. Most notably, when I saw Louise Pitre (pictured) in a production of “Mamma Mia” on Broadway in 2002, I was spellbound. Her hair was so unbelievably gorgeous that I couldn’t take my eyes off her (it also helped that her singing was magnificent). I love seeing confident older women who allow their silver hair to be long and unencumbered, as opposed to tied up tight in a bun like their grandmothers before them.
And so, I’m going to allow myself to grow grey – or silver, as I like to call it. I’ve never had silver hair before – so I’m looking forward to it!
I totally agree..I’ve always loved long, silver hair on women. And my hair does bad stuff when it is colored (only 3 times in my life). But my pretty silver hair is growing in as grey and wiry. Not good. We’ll see if I can pull it off but I think her hair is gorgeous!
WOW.. I have only known you for 6 years and I am impressed. I was just telling my motehr this weekend that she hould let herself go 100% “silver” instead of covering it up. Kudos to you Jaynee! I am sure it will look stunning.
I’ll be interested to see how it looks. I’ve considered letting my natural color come out, but I’m afraid it would just look mousy.
I’m trying to go back to my natural color (dark auburn), too. I’ve been a red head, purple head (accidently) and way too blond lately…I thought I’d go natural until I start graying, and then we’ll see.
So…in the meantime while my roots are growing out, I’m using glazes – they only last about a week and they make your hair sooo shiny!
