I just got back from tonight’s band rehearsal for this Sunday’s service. I am so in love with this set, and how we’re doing it – I could have stayed at practice all night long just singing these songs over and over again.
Since it is Labor Day weekend, we’re going for a more intimate set, knowing we’ll most likely have a smaller attendance. Plus, we have no drummer available, so we’re just going with three vocalists, keyboard, bass and lead guitar/acoustic. It’s a simple elegant sound and we do three part harmonies that are delicious on three of the songs.
We’re starting with Paul Baloche – Hosanna. Our version is much more mellow than the one featured in the link, and Geo let me find a really great distorted organ sound for my part.
Next up is Charlie Hall – All We Need. Once again we don’t have a drummer, so ours is more mellow. I used the same distorted organ sound on my keyboard and this is the one song I don’t sing on, since Katie does the main harmony quite well.
After that – possibly my favorite of the songs, it’s Passion Worship Band’s version of Doxology, featuring Third Day. Absolutely gorgeous, and I picked a really luscious synth for my keyboard part. Katie and I do backup harmonies to Geo’s melody throughout this song and it’s just beautiful. Then at the end, we all slowly fade out, voices and instruments, until all that is left is my keyboard, playing this wonderful synth sound. It’s SO lovely, and I can’t wait to do it Sunday.
We finish out the set with Marc James’ Surrender, again with three part harmonies and a great synth keyboard with acoustic guitar. LOVE IT and what a wonderful way to end the worship set.
Geo’s wife (one of the other keyboardists at my church) is going to be so jealous when she finds out I’m playing all these great synth sounds. *lol* She told me that when she got her keyboard Geo only wanted piano or organ – nothing too fancy. Well, I’m not playing a piano sound AT ALL in this set and my one organ sound is REALLY distorted and non-churchy.
I can’t wait for Sunday!
I’ve heard this version of the Doxology before, it is AWESOME!
I’m totally imagining the organ intro of the Doors “Light My Fire” hahaha!
The church I grew up in did not have musical instruments at all – it’s taken me a long time just to get used to a piano!
