Here is the updated plan from yesterday – we made some modifications last night.
Things to note:
* The foyer stairway is now a center stairway. I may widen the house by two feet in that middle section so that the foyer is two feet wider, thus making the doorways into the great room 4′ wide instead of 3′ wide.
* 1/2 bath is now jutting into the library, with the entry closet jutting into Denis’ office. Mirrored spaces. Prep sink and 1/2 bath will share plumbing and allow all plumbing to remain in the relatively same stacked space in the house.
* Dining room is now one room to the left, my library is in the old DR spot, and Denis’ office is now in the right front corner. Butler pantry moved and got wider as a result.
* Because of the change in stairway, the entrance to the bedrooms has to change – thus, the master now has TWO closets.
* Storage room will now have a hidden access door from the dining room
I liked the idea of the stairs going to a midpoint then coming down to the front of the house and into the Great Room. I still think you can do that.
:cheer:
Ace, that can’t be done with this particular plan – I tried and there’s not enough space for all the stairs that are needed (stairs have to be a certain height and tread and since we have 10′ ceilings we’ll need room for at least 13 stairs, if not more. I’m already cutting it close.
Oooh…a hidden access door?! That sounds so mysterious! 🙂
Just so you get an idea on prices: http://www.hideadoor.com/
The door might be more expensive than my cooking appliance.
Okay, a couple of more things: Is it weird to have seating for the kitchen in the great room? What about shrinking the island a little and rotatign it and moving the prep sink to the island? I think that hallway off the butler’s pantry leading to the dining room is too wide and is a bit of wasted space. What about another door to the 1/2 bath on the first floor via the library so you don’t have to go out to the entry hallway to get to the bathroom from that room?
Overall, I think this is a very economical and workable design. Wonder what an architect would price it at.
Folks using the library don’t need a private entrance to the half bath. They can walk the 15′ it takes to get to the half bath.
The hidden door might be done cheaply by someone local in Fort Mill – maybe the kitchen cabinet maker?
I was just taking another look and thought of something else. You may want to switch your Gym with the Kids playroom. Gym’s tend to get a bit Rank and having it on the corner would allow for a cross breeze and more ventilation. I would even make the windows Sliders or at least f/c windows.
Just sayin’.
Ace, that playroom is actually a guest bedroom – I don’t think our guests would appreciate being in a 10×10 bedroom, which is quite small.
The gym will get cross-breeze from the windows and the doorway that is open to the entire length of the house. By using casement windows they will catch the breeze and bring it into the room for cross-ventilation.
