On Sunday I went in to church early to set up the sound board for the music. I am in training to run the board so that they have one extra person to help out when no one else is available. The board for this church is about 3x the size of the board at my old church. Add in a LOT of wires and buttons and it can be a bit disconcerting.
Fortunately, the set up was actually pretty easy as they have everything clearly marked and labelled. Unfortunately, the band was working with a few extra musicians that basically had the labels on the board itself all changed around. Lucas’ vocal was now Elaine’s violin. Lucas’ acoustic guitar was now Martha’s melodica. Stuff like that, which will all change again next week. Fortunately, I didn’t actually run the soundboard although I did sit with the guy who did it and he consulted with me throughout the whole practice and service.
The music was great on Sunday. It had a very folky sound – almost like Irish folk. The addition of the violin and melodica (a small keyboard played by blowing through a tube) helped with that, as well as the two acoustic guitars used for three of the four songs. They almost sounded like a mellow Arcade Fire. Just a lovely lovely set of music on Sunday, led by the son of our main music guy.
I’m up for the performance side over the next three weeks – singing, singing/keyboards, and singing, respectively. I may be back on soundboard after that, but I’m not sure.
