Project: Declutter

A few months ago I made the decision to try and declutter the house a bit. We sold a lot in the garage sale last month, and whatever didn’t sell immediately got loaded into the car and sent off to Goodwill. I packed up some videos and books in order to clear off one entire bookcase so we could put that in our attic storage. There have been no HUGE projects, but just some minor things that make me feel like we’re living a bit less cluttered (of course, not as decluttered as DENIS would prefer, but that’s never gonna happen).

Today I packed up yet another bookcase of books (one of the two in our guest room) and with Denis’ help moved the boxes into the attic space, along with the actual bookcase. Our guest bedroom has now lost two piece of furniture (a cheap cedar chest that I sold in the garage sale, and the bookcase) and is already feeling more open and spacious. Now if I can just hang my Blue Willow pieces on the wall that room will be complete (after almost four years being in the house).

We have another bookcase in our bedroom and I’m thinking of packing up those books too, and putting the boxes and bookcase in the attic along with the others. I also want to go through my closet and get rid of any clothes I haven’t worn in 2+ years (that would be 99% of them). Our closet will be practically EMPTY at that point.

Other than that, I’m trying to decide what other decluttering projects I can do. We’ve already moved out most of the kids’ toys from the tv room into the dining room, which will function as a kid zone for the next couple of years. CG spent some time in there today, drawing pictures and digging through the toy box. She likes the idea of being able to make a mess without having to worry about cleaning it up right away.

So we’ll see what happens. I’m sure I’ll come up with more things, but for the next couple weeks I’ll concentrate on sending clothes to Goodwill and books to the attic.
