No Squeeze!

I mentioned on CootieGirl’s site that she has what looks to be a pretty bad bug bite on her leg. But then it could also be a staph infection. There’s just no telling and the internet has been no help (since descriptions for both staph abcesses and spider bites are pretty much the same). We’ve drained the infection twice now and she is still in miserable pain. So this morning Denis is taking her to the pediatrician to take a look at it and take a culture sample to see what it is.

It’s never good when your daughter hears the word “squeeze” and knows that it doesn’t mean she’s getting a big hug. Instead it means that pain will be inflicted upon your leg like no other. I fear what she’ll be like at the pediatrician when he tries to look at it. I’m also glad it’s not me taking her!

Update at 11:35 a.m.: Denis just called and said that they believe it’s a staph infection and gave him a prescription for her. They took a culture to make sure, and then they also squeezed and got way more junk out than we ever did (and I thought we got a lot). Denis said CootieGirl was very loud and I bet she probably scared every kid in the joint with her screams of terror and pain. Poor kid. And apparently it’s not over – Denis thinks we’ll have to drain it a couple more times before it’s really on it’s way to healing.

You ready for this, Jen?

Poor baby. Did the doctor say whether it started out as a bite? Seems strange that it would start out looking like a bug bite, although she didn’t seem to itch. There are some nasty new drug-resistant infections out there that we all need to be aware of.

    Poor kid.

We’re not really ready for this yet. It’s why pregnancy lasts as long as it does. =)

Marmie – yes, the ped. mentioned that and gave us a particularly strong antibiotic and asked us to keep an eye on her to make sure she’s not allergic to the medication.

Let’s get the story straight. The ped thinks it is staph. Doesn’t know if it started out as a bug bite, but it could have if she scratched it and got it infected. He said we all have the staph virus on our bodies but it usually doesn’t bother us. Lastly, it gave her the weaker of the anti-biotic and took a sample of the stuff to get it tested. He’ll find out in two days if it’s the stuff that is resistant or not. I’ll call him in two days to find out. If it is, she’ll get bumped up to the stronger drug, but he didn’t want to start her out on that stuff. And that’s the scoop. Plus, she HATED taking her medicine. I hope mommy has an easier time than me. Are you ready for all this, Jen?

Thanks for the clarification, Denis. I admit that when we were on the phone Mr. BIL was hovering over my shoulder and I couldn’t really concentrate fully on what you were saying.

So I guess it’s not bubblegum flavored medicine, huh?
