New School Day! New School Day!

Woke up bright eyed this morning to get the kids off to their new school. Knowing that there was going to be some time of adjustment, we left the house at 7:30 a.m. so that I’d have at least 45 minutes to help the kids get acclimated as well as finish up any paperwork I may have overlooked.

CootieBoy got very nervous and kind of freaked out. He was hanging on my leg like a man fighting for his life. Poor kid. So after a few minutes of that we opted to take CootieGirl to her class. Well, she was just amazing – she took off her coat, put her things in her cubbie and promptly went off to go play after a quick hug from me. She ROCKED IT.

The director was very nice and took CootieBoy on a tour of the facility so he could see the kitchen, the playground, the other classrooms, etc. That got him warmed up and he came out of his shell a bit more by the time we circled back around to his classroom. His teacher showed him the “waving window” where all the parents drive by and wave goodbye. He told me to go drive by, so I quickly left and got into my car and drove around so I could wave to him. Content with that, I saw him walk away from the window.

Well, of course, I wasn’t done with MY stuff, so I pulled in and reparked my car and went back in to the front desk to pay the week’s money and finish the paperwork. CootieBoy saw me (his classroom is near the front desk) but he only smiled at me and then I saw him sit down for storytime. As I finished up my stuff, the storyteller came out from CootieBoy’s class and said, “Your son already has a friend in there – apparently someone from his old daycare is in there.”

That’s AWESOME that he already knows someone in the class – that’ll make the adjustment that much better.

So it went well, and I predict an easier dropoff tomorrow since I know they are going to have a REALLY good time in this new school.

I remember getting ready for my first day of school at Irving Park Park Elementary in Greensboro, N.C. in 1951. I was thinking, this is it, this is the end of freedom. The drudgery of life began then. And it continues.

Heh. Thankfully, CootieGirl was all excitement this morning. I think that drudgery for her will start in 2nd grade. She’s VERY excited for kindergarten in the fall, and I’m sure she’ll be proud about going up to 1st grade. But second grade? I predict it’ll be hard to wake her up the second day of school. *lol*
