Last year I made the mistake of getting progressive glasses for everyday use. I hated them from day one. People told me I’d get used to them after a few weeks, but that day never arrived. I’ve hated the progressives the entire year I wore them. Something is ALWAYS out of focus – usually the TV. It was annoying to have to squint or tilt my head in order to get the sweet spot of having the TV be in focus.
So when it came time for a new eye appointment, I decided to get rid of the progressives and go back to what I had before” single lens. Unfortunately, I had to go to a different optometrist because mine was not in my new eye plan. Pity that, since I ADORED my optometrist. Truly. She always made me laugh, and always listened to what I had to say about what I wanted for my glasses (progressives notwithstanding – had I known how difficult they’d be, I wouldn’t have said yes to them).
I opted to go to America’s Best since they were open on weekends and had decent prices. The eye appointment was normal, the optometrist was nice enough, and I told the doc I did not want progressives. He recommended getting two pairs of glasses – one pair strictly for computer use, and one for everything else. That sounded reasonable, and like a better alternative to the progressives, so that’s what I did. I figured I’d leave the computer glasses at work all the time, and use the other glasses all other times.
Well, that was a BIG mistake. First pf a;;, the computer glasses literally ONLY work at the computer. The minute I stand up to move around the room I’m in, everything is blurry. Secondly, the “everything else” glasses are great for everything EXCEPT close up. As such, when looking at my phone, it’s completely blurry and out of focus unless I hold my phone out at arm’s length. You know. Like an old person.
I guess now that I’m approaching 50 years old, it’s time for me to become the person that moves an item back and forth in front of my face in attempt to get it into focus, or gives up and lifts up my glasses to read the fine print.
What sucks is that now I have to wait ANOTHER year before I can ditch these glasses and go in and say, “No, look, that didn’t work. Really, just let me have bifocals. That’s all I need.” Screw the middle distance computer stuff. I don’t care about that, even though I’m on the computer 9 hours a day. I just want to be able to drive my car and read my phone. Isn’t that all old people need nowadays anyway?
Maybe some “granny glasses” from the drugstore for those close-up moments?
So, wear a SECOND pair of glasses dangling from a rope around my neck at all times? No thanks!
