Movies: Rounders and Monster

We took advantage of the snowy weekend and caught up on movies and Tivo. There’s something quite fulfilling (in a sad, losery sort of way) in seeing your Tivo list down to two things you are saving for your toddler daughter and a short clip from America’s Funniest Home Videos that features babies throwing up on people.

On Friday night we watched “Rounders” that Ed Norton/Matt Damon movie from several years ago about poker playing. For a movie about poker, there wasn’t a lot of it. The movie was actually kind of boring – John Malkovich chewing the scenery notwithstanding.

2 poker chips out of five.

“Monster”, the Charlize “Oh Give Me An Award for Gaining 30 Pounds” Theron starred in this story based on the life of Aileen Wuornos, the serial killer that was executed a couple of years ago. I expected this movie to be only so-so, but was thrilled when after the first 15 minutes I completely forgot about the makeup and just became enthralled in the sad true tale of an abused woman that tries to make good only to find out that being bad can pay off. Don’t know how much of it was true and how much was movie-making, but it was still a decent movie.

And on a side note, I ate way too much pasta at lunch today. I’m feeling miserable right about now.
