This movie was one of the options on the plane ride from Charlotte to London. While I’m not a huge Scorcese fan, I love Leo DiCaprio and Matt Damon, so I figured I’d give it a whirl. It didn’t disappoint. Yes, the language was atrocious, but the story in itself was interesting, well-paced and completely engrossing. I thought DiCaprio deserved his Oscar nomination for his role as an undercover cop caught up in the mob life. And Matt Damon – playing against his good guy type – was quite good as the mob guy playing cop. Jack Nicholson was surprisingly un-Nicholson as the unraveling mob boss and also deserved his Oscar nod. And hello – I love Alec Baldwin (he played one of the chiefs in the police department).
It was typical Scorcese – violent, profane, moody and dark. But it was well done. Did he deserve the Oscar for directing? Sure – the movie definitely had the Scorcese look and feel, and he should be rewarded for it after all these years since it is so distinctive.
4 rats out of five.
Funny. You and I are no longer liking the same movies as much. I disliked it so much that I didn’t finish watching it.
I watched this movie this weekend, too. I really enjoyed it – it stressed my husband out. But, I think that’s the sign of a good movie – if you’re emotionally engaged. Plus, Matt & Leo are two of my fake boyfriends.
It’s so funny, I didn’t mind the language in this movie (I guess I expected f-bombs & tuned it out), but in “Cars” this weekend I noticed that they said “Hillbilly H*LL” and it totally stuck out & offended me!
