It’s a movie weekend, folks!
Tonight I didn’t feel like watching basketball and there wasn’t much else on, so I put on “Ray”, the Jamie Foxx movie. I bought it from Columbia House a long time ago because it got such good reviews, but never got around to watching it until just tonight.
Boy did Jamie Foxx ever deserve that Oscar nomination. He was very good. I never “forgot” that it was Jamie Foxx like I’ve seen other people say concerning his performance, but I was always impressed with how understated he was. He’s come a long way since “In Living Color”.
I didn’t know much about Ray Charles going into it – I didn’t grow up listening to his music or anything, even though I obviously knew who he was and knew his songs. I liked how the movie didn’t sugarcoat his awful treatment of women – and he was definitely awful to his ever-patient wife. And how about that pesky heroin addiction? Kudos to him for beating it and continuing with his career for another 40 years, unlike other great musicians that were lost before their time (see “Bird”, starring Forest Whitaker, possibly one of the most torturous drug/musician movies EVER).
