Last night Denis and I watched “Pieces of April”, a short little independent movie starring Katie Holmes as a young woman determined to make Thanksgiving dinner for her wacky family (IMDB description: “A wayward daughter invites her dying mother and the rest of her estranged family to her apartment for Thanksgiving dinner”). Co-starring Oliver Platt and Patricia Clarkson as April’s parents, this little charmer was a bit “talky” in the beginning but rounded out nicely and was an enjoyable movie. More along the lines of what an independent movie should be.
At the beginning I said to Denis that it felt like it was a play – the dialogue just seemed very…playwright, to me. However, that feeling quickly ended once the story actually got going. Sean “Will and Grace” Hayes makes a brief but really funny appearance as a neighbor of April’s.
Good rental.
