Movie: Nacho Libre

I really wanted to like this movie, for two reasons. 1) I like Jack Black – he makes me laugh and in an odd way he’s kind of attractive. I know I know. Shut up. 2) A guy a church loves this movie. Loves it so much he calls it his number one movie of all time. Every week he quotes it verbatim – including the accent – while we set up the sound system. He was very happy when I told him it was at my house this week.

But.

Oh, Jack Black. It just wasn’t funny. Sure, there were times that I laughed, but it was more because I recognized the quote as being on that Lucas says on Sunday mornings. I mean, Lucas even has the inflection down in each quote. THAT’S what was making me laugh – moreso than anything actually being said in the movie.

It’s the tale of Ignacio, a man who grew up in the orphanage and decides to become a Luchador (a Mexican wrestler) in order to raise money for the orphans he now cares for as a monk. Being a Jack Black vehicle, it has great potential, but I just thought it fell a little flat, and I’m worried that when I tell Lucas on Sunday that I didn’t like it that much, that his opinion of me will fall just a little bit. Okay, a lot.

But I just can’t help it. The movie wasn’t good.
