I tried to get the kids to watch this a couple days ago, thinking it was kid-friendly for the younger set, but within five minutes CootieGirl was begging me to turn it off. It’s just as well – having watched it last night I can say that it would have scared the crap outta her if we had kept watching it.
But what a great Halloween movie! Using animation techniques similar to that of creating Gollum in “Lord of the Rings” this movie stars such notable talents of Steven Buscemi, Jason Lee, Maggie Gyllenhall, Kevin James, Nick Cannon, Jon Heder and Kathleen Turner. But it isn’t just their voices – they actually acted out this movie on an empty soundstage and had the CGI animation done later on. Very cool.
As described on Amazon:
A young boy named DJ has suspicions about the house across the street and the cranky old man who lives there. When the old man has a heart attack and is carried away by an ambulance, DJ thinks the danger is over. Unfortunately, as he, his friend Chowder, and a candy-selling prep-school girl named Jenny discover, the house itself has plans–plans that include eating all the kids who’ll be trick-or-treating that Halloween night.
I have to say that I really liked it, and I look forward to CootieGirl and CootieBoy being old enough some day to actually watch it (turns out it’s really more of a PG-13 movie than a PG movie, but it is rated PG nonetheless). Unless I’ve scarred them permanently and they refuse to watch it since they got freaked during the first five minutes this time around.
3 1/2 red kites out of five.
She’s one smart, sensitive little girl. So glad she knew she couldn’t handle it.
I brought Moira and a bunch of her friends to see this movie last summer when it was in the theater. After the first 15 minutes, I was freaking out with the movie choice. CootieGirl (6 at the time) was also there with 2 of her buddies – also 6. It’s definitely a dark dark movie. Luckily, no one had any issues but I’ve got to say it was a little touch and go there that first night right before bedtime!
I saw this movie a few months ago on Netflix… wasn’t sure if I really wanted to see it, but since it showed up at the house, I thought… “why not”. I watched it and wasn’t disappointed at all. Cute little movie.
Still waiting for my apology regarding the “lost” DVD player in the garage. LOL
