One of the perks of the weekend was that Saturday was a “me day” – with Denis and his brother taking the kids to the zoo for the day, I got to just chill and do what *I* wanted to do. That meant 1) chick flick, 2) super-long shower, 3) haircut, 4) painting. With NO interruptions!
The chick flick in question was “Memoirs of a Geisha”. I read the book when it first came out and really liked it. And I have to say that I’m glad that it took so long for the movie to be made so that I didn’t make the inevitable comparisons to the book. I remembered much of the book, but not so many details that it distracted me during the movie if they left something out or changed something. From IMDb:
Nitta Sayuri reveals how she transcended her fishing-village roots and became one of Japan’s most celebrated geisha.
And the movie was lovely. I enjoyed every minute of it. I thought the cinematography was amazing, the acting was refined and understated but still powerful, and the screenplay incredibly well adapted. Plus, Ken Watanabe is hot.
3 1/2 monogrammed handkerchiefs out of five.
Totally agree about this film, except that I’d jack up that handkerchief count by AT LEAST a half. I was amazed to have such a good story paired with such a delicious visual experience…quite rare.
