Movie: Glory Road

Glory Road (Widescreen Edition)Ah, another basketball movie set in the old days in which they overcome adversity and prove everybody wrong. Gotta love it.

“Hoosiers” is one of my favorite movies. Although the story is completely different in “Glory Road”, the theme remains the same nonetheless. Based on another true story, “GR” tells the tale of the Texas Western NCAA Basketball Coach that goes against the grain and has 3 African-American men as starters and seven African-American men on the team in total. Despite the prejudice they face along the way, the team continues to win game after game.

I thought it was a well-done movie although a bit hokey in some scenes (which was reminiscent of the hokey scenes that are in just about every sports movie as well – the only thing missing was a scene where all the team members sing “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg” or “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” or any other song with “Ain’t” in the title while in the shower after yet another winning game).

But still, a good Friday night rental (and better than “Friday Night Lights” I might add).

3 tip-offs out of five.
