I love Will Farrell. Even when his movies are subpar, I love him. He just makes me laugh.
So while this movie wasn’t that great, I still enjoyed it. Much happier that it was a Netflix movie rather than an in-person theater movie. The movie had a great cast – WF, Jon Heder, Jenna Fischer (from The Office), Amy Poehler, Will Arnett, and others.
The movie is about two figure skaters who are sworn enemies. They get barred from skating after an on-the-ice brawl during a competition. However, three years later they decide to skate together – in pairs figure skating. It’s an AWESOME premise, but it falls a bit short. I think sometimes writers and directors just relax a bit too much when Will Farrell is attached to a movie and presume he’ll be able to carry it. And while he carries some movies incredibly well (Anchorman, Elf), he still needs the people around him to amazing too.
One problem? I’m not a huge Jon Heder fan. He just isn’t that funny, and even years after doing Napoleon Dynamite I still feel like every role he does now still has THAT VOICE, and it’s annoying. On the flip side, Jenna Fischer was great – she’s drop dead gorgeous when she’s gussied up (which The Office never lets her do) and her characters’ discomfort is so perfect.
Another distraction – the scenes that were supposed to be on ice that weren’t on ice? Incredibly fake and I expected better from a big budget movie like this.
