This morning we headed over to Summerfest in York. Got there around 10:30 a.m. and drove around a bit to find a parking spot. Finally found one and was hit by a wave of heat when we made our way over to the street set aside for food vendors. It was painfully HOT. We immediately bought the kids some flavored ice to cool them off, while Denis bought a BBQ sandwich (even at 10:30 a.m. it’s never too early for BBQ). We then spent the next 90 minutes wandering around looking at the booths. The kids did get on one inflatable slide that was set up, but for the most part we just kept hydrating and seeking shade.
I was most interested in the art/craft booths and didn’t see a SINGLE painter there. LOTS of jewelry, hair accessories, and purses. One vendor did have fleece blankets out, but they were not handtied like I offer. The only painters there were the kind that paint on glass – like wine glasses or decorative plates. So I just might do a booth there next year despite the intense heat. We found that the booths that offered shade were significantly cooler than those that had no shade. I’ll happily use my booth including the walls in order to provide shading for customers so that it’ll get them in my booth!!
About 90 minutes into it, CootieBoy pitched a fit when we tried to lead him away from one booth that had a kiddie pool set up and let kids “fish.” He didn’t want to leave. And when we led him away he full on collapsed on the ground and began kicking and screaming. Knowing that it was the heat that was causing it, once we got him calmed down we got him another flavored ice and quickly hit the road. But not until I bought a full rack of ribs from the place where Denis had bought his sandwich upon our arrival. THEN we headed home.
Those ribs were great – nice flavor, and in many ways better than the BBQ we had in Lexington last week. After lunch we got CootieBoy suited up and I took him to the pool where we played for a couple hours while Denis and CootieGirl went grocery shopping. After two hours I could tell that Denis wasn’t going to bring CootieGirl to the pool (that had been the plan – for him to bring her once they got home from shopping) so CootieBoy and I packed up and headed home. Yes, we are a bit sunburned. Fortunately when CootieBoy is at the pool he wears a shirt and swimmies so the only portions of his upper body that are in the sun are his lower arms and head. His cheeks are a bit pink, but I’m the one that bore the brunt of the sun – I can feel the heat on my shoulders and back of my neck.
Ummm, the full on tantrum was caused by the heat???
Mmmmmm… ribs. Thanks, now I’m drooling.
I’m not looking forward to when Xan has a tantrum after he’s acquired the power of speech. He does the fall on the floor thing already… but at least there are no words to go with it yet, lmao!
Also, do I see on your calender that Denis is going to be in Atlanta from the 6th to the 9th of Sept? If so, how crazy is that? Rick is going to GA on business the 6th and the 7th, and I was like… I should see if Jaynee’s busy those two days! I would just have to get someone to watch the dogs if I went anywhere.
Finally, in response to your comment on my blog… I would LOVE to take pictures of your beautiful family.
Marmie – yes, by the time he had his tantrum we were ALL a bit cranky from the heat. CootieBoy just decided to be more proactive in letting off some steam.
Meghan – I work full time so I won’t be available until the evening on those nights, but you guys are welcome to come with Xan and actually spend the night on the 7th if you want and then spend part of the 8th with us before heading home. I have a guest room that you and Xan are welcome to if you want to come hang out.
