I’ve called the last day of our move to South Carolina the Worst Wednesday on Record. I’ve tried to find what the temperature was on that particular day in July when I threw up from heat exposure while we loaded the last bit of our stuff into a storage unit in Rock Hill. I swore I’d never self-move again.
Cut to a year later, and my sister and her family are told they have to be out of their townhouse and into a new one post haste. With them unable to afford movers, I opted to drive to NoVA to help them move.
It was 97 degrees today. About the same as I suffered through last year. The bonus this time? There were six of us unloading the truck instead of two. And we had the option to take breaks indoor and drink lots of cool water, which we didn’t have last year. So in many ways this was a BETTER move, but not really.
LOTS of sweating. I was soaked through at some point, and I didn’t even do the really hard work like the guys did with the truly heavy pieces of furniture (although I did attempt to help them lift the heavy stuff). Fortunately, Jen and Beau’s friends were awesome and did an awesome job. One guy in particular really kept everyone’s spirits up and was very encouraging, which was very much needed as we sat there with racing pulses and heat-induced headaches.
The new townhouse is nice – it’s an older townhouse that is strictly rental property, so there are definitely flaws, but they are minimal and I know Jen and Beau will quickly make that place a wonderful home.
So tonight I will chill out with a movie or a book and try to get to bed early in advance of my drive tomorrow. I don’t think my uncle Jack is going to be riding with me since I haven’t gotten a call from him. The drive down last night went really well – we talked practically the whole way, which was my primary concern. I mean sure, Denis can talk up a storm on a road trip, but since I had never traveled with Jack I didn’t know what he preferred – silence, talk, music, DVDs, frequent stops, straight shot. I found we had a happy balance of all of those and the trip went by very quickly (we left Charlotte a bit late but managed to pull into my parents’ driveway at 1:00 a.m., which was awesome). Anyway, Jack thinks his son will be driving back to SC tomorrow for a week’s visit, so they won’t need me to take them back. So it’ll be just me.
I’m charging up my DVD player battery now and finally found my cigarette lighter adapter to recharge my MP3 player as well. I’m planning on going to the store in the morning to buy more Utz chips and then head for home – my hope is to be home by 5 p.m.
And I have more info on the keyboard front, but will share that whole fiasco no later than Monday. I’m at least happy to report that I haven’t paid the seller, which is a blessing. I’m sad to report that I have contacted eBay about potential fraud on the seller’s part.
