Let’s Compare Zoos

So as you saw the pictures posted below, we went to the NC Zoo this weekend. We decided quite quickly that we much prefer our Riverbanks Zoo in Columbia, SC. Let’s count the reasons why:

1) Riverbanks is a large circle with many paths leading back to the main entrance, making it easier to see all the exhibits and yet not get that feeling of being STUCK. NC Zoo started in one place and ended in another. Enter in one section, leave by another unless you want to walk the MANY MANY MILES back to your original entrance.

2) Riverbanks exhibits better planned – sure, the sea lions at the NC Zoo had a better habitat, but at least you can SEE the sea lions at the Riverbanks habitat. Same goes for just about every other animal you wish to see.

3) Children’s Carousel – infinitely more awesome at Riverbanks. Plus Riverbanks has a petting zoo and pony rides for kids, which NC Zoo didn’t have (at least, not that we saw).

4) I mentioned the walking in item 1, but let me reiterate. Most of the day Saturday was spent walking from exhibit to exhibit. And we’re talking a good 5-10 minute walk between some of those exhibits. At least at Riverbanks you are walking two minutes TOPS between each exhibit.

We have a membership at Riverbanks that was good for free entrance to the NC Zoo, but as soon as we left the NC Zoo on Saturday we were in agreement that from now on we’d stick with Riverbanks. And not just because it’s a 20 minute shorter drive to Riverbanks.

I saw the sign for the Riverbanks Zoo when I was in Columbia visiting Sandy B. It is just blocks from her house! You must go visit her sometime. She has a very child-friendly home, Southern hospitality and a POOL!! 🙂

Not for the pool, silly, but to visit with old friends. The bonus is that they have a pool.
