Is That a Copperhead or a Timber Rattler? Either Way, I Want It Gone!

A few days ago our neighbor behind us told us he was clearing out some debris from the back of his yard (along our fence) and came across a copperhead snake. He killed it, but he said it freaked him out to think of his kids playing in the backyard with a poisonous snake living about 20 feet from his kids’ swingset.

In the same general area where he had debris we have a large stack of rotting firewood that has been there who knows how long. We have a gas fireplace, so it has to be REALLY old. Since our neighbor found a poisonous snake in the same area as our woodpile, we have decided to get rid of it.

Nathan, our neighbor, wanting to verify the kind of snake he killed, found pictures online and determined it was a timber rattler. Which makes sense since it was living in a huge pile of wood debris. After discussing it with Denis, we agreed to split the cost of a removal company to come in and remove all the debris from both of our yards to eliminate the temptation for snakes to live there.

Last night Nathan called and said he had hired a company to come out today, and that our portion would be $110. That’s a BARGAIN. I asked if the company had actually SEEN how much wood was in our backyard, and Nathan said that the guy had been out earlier in the day, and that’s what he quoted for our particular stack. Nathan’s stack, which is bigger, will be about $150. That’s amazingly cheap. It’s a full day’s work at least if it’s just one guy, and half a day for two. But then again, $260 divided among two guys is a nice chunk of change for half a day’s work.

So when we get home tonight it should all be gone. WOO HOOO!!!
