Is It Time To Go Yet?

A couple weeks ago Mr. BIL told me that the last week of December is the busiest one at the Firm since they are trying to get everything done before the new year begins. This year, since Christmas is on a Monday, and Tuesday is a holiday, it means that the last week of December is only THREE DAYS. So I’ve already been warned that it’ll be crazier than normal.

Uh…normal for me is to work 9 a – 6 p.m. with no lunch. With OT on occasion. And even then I rarely get all my tasks done for the day. How on earth can it be CRAZIER than that?

Today was a comical day. Mr. BIL has three stacks outside his office. “To Do”, “Incoming Mail” and “General Filing” (which is really MY stack since I reorganized upon arrival). His first two stacks get to about 6″ high and then he says, “Okay, let’s go through this stuff!” at which point he basically hands 75% of it back to me to process at his discretion.

Today was one of those days – I left his office with a huge stack of papers to go through – some for filing, some for shredding, some for passing on to others, and still more to actually work on. So for most of the day I worked on that and wasn’t able to get any of my stuff from last night done.

And yet despite all this Mr. BIL continues to be pleased with my level of service and says I’m doing a great job!! He never gets angry when I do minor things wrong or when others do major things wrong (fortunately I’m not in that category. Yet.). He never yells about missing files, or missing letters, or emails that never went out. He always calls back his clients even if he has no desire to talk to them. I guess that’s the reason he’s one of the most respected lawyers in Charlotte (as I’ve come to find out recently).

The good news is that he is out on Friday, because all my filing that I already had to do? Well, that got doubled today after our meeting this morning. So my entire Friday will be spent filing unless Skater ends up giving me a lot of work. You notice I never talk about my other boss, Skater. That’s because the work I do for him is minimal – just timesheets and updating documents. But never anything really time sensitive that has to get done right away.

Continuing to love this job.
