Okay, so we’re halfway through the television season now, and with the writer’s strike upon us we’re going to hit a bunch of repeats coming up in the next week or two. What shows are currently in my rotation with no expectation of removal?
New shows I love and adore:
1. Chuck – have loved it since episode one. The lead guy is awesome and the writing is fun and frantic. A great comedy adventure show. The cast is REALLY likeable and the stories each week are interesting. We’re half a dozen episodes into the season and the writers are finally adding some depth to the characters and I find myself getting invested in Chuck’s story. GREAT show.
2. Journeyman – I didn’t really like the first episode, but I stuck with it because I liked the premise, and the show has been getting better and better with each episode.
3. Reaper – I continue to enjoy this show with a strange premise (parents sell son’s soul to the Devil, and son is then required to work as a repo man for the Devil and return escaped lost souls to Hell). Like I said, it’s a weird premise, and I’m on constant vigil for any signs that the Devil is a good guy, but this show is a good at making the Devil SEEM like a jocular, fun, nice guy but underneath you know he’s just holding back his true evil self. Ray Wise, who plays the Devil, is PERFECTLY CAST. Oily, slick, charming and just…exactly what I envision the Devil to be. In this week’s episode the Devil was talking with Sam in a bar about what is better, love or lust. Sam says he knows love is better, and the Devil disagrees and flashes this digusting and truly EVIL smile. Seriously – it gave me chills. It’s that kind of acting on the part of Ray Wise that makes him so perfect for the role. I wish I could find a video clip of that scene so you can see what I’m talking about. Only occasionally do the writers have the Devil say things that don’t quite jibe, but for the most part it is good writing.
4. Pushing Daisies – LOVE IT. I was sad that it wasn’t on this week. I love everything about the show – the look, the narration, the actors, the plots, the witty dialogue. It’s just a heavenly show in every single way.
What about you? Any shows that are new this season that you’ve fallen in love with?
Private Practice and Gossip Girl
Bionic Woman and Life are on my list.
We like Journeyman a lot, too.
I read that they have finally given up on their original intent with “Bionic Woman” to make it dark and broody and are now trying to make it a mix of “Chuck” and “Alias”.
