Whereas yesterday at work I did absolutely nothing because all my guys were traveling, today we will be super-busy here at home. Tomorrow night is our annual White Elephant party. We have 23 friends coming over this year (a lower number than usual, but that’s okay because it means more space for everyone in our cramped living room!).
Today we’ll be spending the entire morning cleaning the entire house from top to bottom. I was hoping to get a woman in here from church who cleans houses for a living, but Denis seems to think we can get the job done ourselves. I’m going to start upstairs and work my way down to the main floor.
Then in the afternoon and evening I will be prepping food – some things can be made in advance, others only prepped in advance, and that is what I will be doing the rest of the day. Normally Denis and I end up with about 50% of the food we make not being eaten. Our hors d’oeurves are generally larger than a typica hors d’oeurves (two bites as opposed to one bite), so they fill people up quickly and we end up eating the leftovers for the week after the party. So we’re going to try an experiment and make exact HALF of what we normally make – hopefully this won’t be an exceedingly hungry group this year or we’re screwed. *lol* But if we run out of food we’ll just bring out pretzels and chips or something. But somehow I think we’ll be okay.
Then tomorrow morning we’ll finish the food and then do a quick cleanup of the mainfloor again. I’ll leave at 4 p.m. to go get our babysitter and home by 5 p.m., which is when the party generally begins although the first guest usually arrives around 5:30 p.m.
Should be a fun weekend, although tiring. My sister is due to arrive around 2 p.m., and then my pal Gladys arrives around 8 p.m. So we’ll have plenty of help tomorrow, which is great since I’ll need at least ONE of them to act as a watcher for CootieGirl so that she doesn’t completely make a mess of the living room (her normal play area).
Hope you have a wonderful party and are able to get everything done that is important to you. Will be prayin’.
Why is it called White Elephant?
In ancient India, I believe, there was a tradition of the Raja giving his favored followers a rare white elephant. Of course, you just couldn’t refuse, nor could you get rid of it, and white elephants are not useful for anything and have to be fed and cleaned up after. Great gift, eh?
