I finally had the chance to finish this book over the weekend. I’ve mentioned before how much I wanted to consult with Wikipedia to find out how this woman’s story ended. Elizabeth Fones Winthrop Feakes Hallet lived in Puritan America, having married into the family of Governor John Winthrop of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. She defied conventional thinking, the government and her family. At one point in her life, Elizabeth befriended Anne Hutchinson, a woman who was convicted of false religion for claiming that people could have a personal relationship with God as opposed to going only through priests or parsons.
Anya Seton is a great writer – I have read and loved one other of her books, “Katherine” and given the fact that I enjoyed this one just as much, I’ll probably be adding a couple other Seton books to my Amazon wishlist.
If you like history at all, I heartily recommend you read “The Winthrop Woman” – you won’t be disappointed.
