After reading some heavyish fiction lately (zombie manual notwithstanding) my next few books are going to be strictly pulp fiction as I try and whittle down my reading list a bit. So how better to begin whittling then a medieval Harlequin romance novel? Started this one yesterday, finished it today.
Gotta love disposable fiction (shout out to Danielle Steel who is coming up next)!
Do I really need to go into this one at all? Seriously. Do I?
Okay, fine.
English woman betrothed to violent man escapes with enemy Irish soldier in the mid 1100s. Falls in love with Irish soldier who is a widower whose wife was killed by…you guessed it. The English. Woman battles to overcome fear of men and Irish soldier battles to forget his dead wife. Blah blah blah, 250 pages later the book is over and everyone knows how these things end. Imagine the Julia Roberts movie “Sleeping With The Enemy” set in King Arthur’s Court (earlier, actually, right? Wasn’t King Arthur supposed to be the 1300s? Am I totally off base? Aw, who cares. I don’t even feel like looking it up to see if I’m wrong.)
The thing I loved most about this book? CootieBoy kept asking me if I was reading “Shrek”. I suppose the man pictured on the cover was a close enough resemblance that CootieBoy wished for me to read passages out loud to him. Given it was a Harlequin romance, I abstained from doing so.
Yeah, this was a tad earlier than King Arthur – but probably close enough (plus it’s Ireland, not England, so a little more…wild.) But did you like it? I ask only because the author is a good friend from high school and I wanted to know before I pointed her this way to see that her book was being talked about (it’s her first and she’s pretty excited, as you might imagine.) Book two comes out in September. 🙂
Beth – wow! Small world! Yes, I liked it and you can tell your friend that I liked it, despite not saying as much in the review. It’s hard to review since to me it’s just a “typical” Harlequin. However, it was a GOOD Harlequin – so no complaints over here!!
Cool, I’ll let her know. 🙂 It is a pretty typical Harlequin, but then again, that’s why it’s Harlequin, right? They’ve got a good brand so you usually know what you’re getting when you pick one up.
