Tonight I’ll be attending the practice session for the band at our church. I spoke with the Head Music Guy (“HMG”) on Sunday and it sounds like it is a long involved process to even become part of the band. I have to attend the practices (but won’t get to participate much), I have to be part of the setup/teardown group each Sunday, and after doing THAT for a few weeks to “prove” my level of commitment to become a part of the band, THEN I can do an actual audition to become a SUBSTITUTE member of the band. Not even a full-fledged member.
That kind of threw me for a loop, to think that I may not even get to audition until March, and even then I may only sing/play piano once every couple months.
So I told HMG that at my old church I played the keyboard and did background vocals every single week unless I was sick or out of town because we didn’t have the luxury of substitute musicians. I told him that a few times I provided soundboard backup to our sound guy if he was out of town or sick. I told him that I faithfully helped with the setup and teardown each week at our old church. I told him I could read music OR just play off charts. I told him I primarily did harmonies but occasionally sang lead or a solo. So for all intents and purposes I’ve got everything he’s looking for.
But we’ll see. I’ll go tonight and see what the practice is like and tell them that I won’t be setting up on Sunday since I’ll be in VA to see my sister.
