And We Officially Have An Aquarium!

This morning CootieBoy and I headed over to PetSmart and picked up our fish. I got recommendations from an online fish forum and wrote down a few of their suggestions. Once at the store, I immediately determined we definitely DID NOT want goldfish of any kind. So we moved over to the tropical community section and fortunately CB quickly picked out some red wag platys that he wanted. They like to dart around the entire tank. We got four of those (1 male, 3 females) and they are each about 1 inch long right now:

The fish forum had recommended ghost shrimp as potential bottom feeders, but the woman at PetSmart said she would be worried about them dying off too quickly and recommended a corydora catfish instead. They had three varieties, and I liked the peppered one, so that’s what we got. He’s about 2 inches long right now. He blends in with the grey-blue rocks we have in the tank right now, which is kind of cool. He’ll stand out more whenever we switch the rocks to the light brown ones I have.

Lastly, I wanted a “centerpiece” fish – one that would be a nice counterbalance for the red platys that CB picked out. I ended up getting a 2-3 inch long blue dwarf gourami.

Once the water was acclimatized I opened up the bag and put them in the water. They immediately made themselves at home and after a few minutes I put some fish food in there for them and they gobbled it up. I’m thrilled to death and very excited. Possibly even more than CB, who was bouncing around the house as much as I was once the fish were in the tank!

Be careful with the gourami. They tend to jump out of the tank if they get the chance. My fish-phobia kind of originates from the ones that jumped out and died on the floor next to dad’s tank when we were little!

Good luck with the aquarium, though. The plays are pretty!

Thanks Diz. Fortunately, I’ve got the whole top covered – the light fixture, a glass cover, plus the filter and heater stuff. There is only about a 1 inch square gap along the whole top of the tank – if that gourami makes it outta there from that gap then he’ll get a funeral worthy of a king.

Would that “funeral worthy of a king” be a “royal flush?”
