Not The Only Divided House

Someone at my office is going through the same thing as we are in the Cootie household. One spouse likes Obama, the other doesn’t. And much like our case, it’s not that the non-Obama supports McCain, necessarily, but just doesn’t much like Obama’s hyper-liberalism. As I told someone for work, “I’m not necessarily pro-McCain as I am anti-Obama.”

Anyway, the Obama spouse asked Young Attorney and L-Train to decorate her husband’s office with dozens of pictures of Obama. Very funny. I admit I helped with the joke by super-sizing the pictures onto 11×17 paper.

I just wish I was going to be there tomorrow when he sees his office. Sadly, I’ll be arriving after he gets in. But with any luck I’ll get to hear the story, which is sure to be hilarious.

You should check out this week’s edition of Newsweek. It helps put things in historical perspective.

If Obama wins, and that seems likely, it won’t mean the end of the world. If we can survive Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon, Jimmy Carter, and W, then we’ll do fine.

    The Republic will endure.

Yeah, I figure only the next two years will be really rough if the Dems still hold control of Congress. However, with the next set of elections in 2010 it’s possible that we’ll have a restoration of checks and balances (which we’ll have NONE of from 2008-2010 if Obama wins) if more Independents or Republicans win back or maintain those 34 seats up for grabs.

Bill, I was thinking something similar the other day. If this country can survive two of the worst presidents in history (Richard Nixon and George Bush — both Republican crooks) we should have no problem making it through eight years of Barack Obama with flying colors.

You know, I remember back in the 80s when Reagan haters said he was the worst president ever, too. History will say whether or not W was a terrible president.

I predict that if Obama wins, he’ll be a 1 termer and he’ll get a Republican-led Congress to deal with in 2010.

Jen – given what has happened in the past few months, despite it not being Bush’s fault, he’ll get the blame when history looks back. So I don’t think W will ever be considered a good president. I think most Presidents are mainly remembered for the BEGINNING or END of their terms, not the whole. Case in point: Carter is remembered for the hostages taken by Iran, Reagan is remembered for getting them freed…

Yes, there were Reagan haters because he was an actor not a politician, but he proved those doubters wrong because he had charisma and was a true statesman. History has already spoken on W’s behave and he must go! I don’t think they keep negative poll numbers on politicians, do they?

And I’ll take you up on that bet. If Obama gets in, he’ll be here for 8 years and there will not be a Reublican-led Congress to deal with in 2010. Just tell me how much you want to lose on that bet and I’ll give you my PayPal account so you can direct deposit the money. Thanks.

True about Presidents being remembered for how they took office or left it more than the middle bulk of their tenor, but in W’s case, he had eight steady lousy years, so it’s fair to judge him as a failure in any way you want to look at it.

I agree that W hasn’t helped his legacy with the bailout mess. However, Reagan is not remembered only for the freeing of the hostages. I’d say that glasnost is a bigger get for Reagan in the history books, but also his tax policies.

Nobody should get too smug here. Reagan may have reformed tax policies, but he also ran up some of the biggest deficits in history. And as for for you democrats, it was Clinton who approved the Financial Services Modernization Act of 1999 which regulated finance and banking services and set the stage for current mess.

    Two cents. (OK, maybe 3).

Jen – I don’t know squat about Reagan’s tax policies. But I do know he’s credited with getting those hostages freed. That’s what I’m talking about. Sure, political junkies may know the deeper core of what each president contributes during his tenure, but average folks like me? Not so much.
