I’ve long held the opinion that “Baba O’Riley” is the greatest song of all time. In fact, I get a LOT of hits from people doing searches for “greatest song of all time” and I’m happy that those people who make it to Cootiehog know what my top pick is.
However, now that I’m listening to all 6,212 songs on my MP3 in alphabetical order, it has come to my attention what song I obviously REALLY think is the best song of all time.
“Hallelujah” by Leonard Cohen.
Great song. I know, right? Well, it turns out I have multiple versions of that song on my MP3 player.
Jeff Buckley
kd lang
Bono
Kevin Max
Jason Castro
I’m actually surprised that I don’t have an original Cohen version or the John Cale version (which appeared in the movie “Shrek” and was the first song that made CootieGirl wail in sadness when she heard it).
So it’s a toss-up at this point. I LOVE “Baba O’Riley” and crank my radio up everytime it’s on the radio. I think it’s the most perfectly written song of all time (much like “Shawshank Redemption” is the most perfectly written movie screenplay of all time). But I only have one version of that song (although I admit to liking …oh shoot, her name just escaped me. John Bonham’s daughter – what’s her name? She did a cover of it that was pretty good). I have FIVE versions of “Hallelujah” and just may log onto iTune and download Cohen’s and Cale’s (I have a free download code available for one of those). So I think from now on if I’m asked what the GREATEST song in the world is, I’ll continue to say “Baba,” but if I’m asked what my FAVORITE song of all time is, it’ll be “Hallelujah.”
I remember the first time I heard that song, the Jeff Buckley version.
It was on the West Wing: C.J. had fallen in love with her Secret Service agent, her stalker was taken care of so he was no longer assigned to protect her. He was on his way to the Kennedy center to meet her and stopped in at a littler market to buy her a flower. He walked into a robbery in progress and was shot dead. The story was enough to move me to tears but hearing the song while it happened just broke my heart. It’s definitely one of my favorite songs of all time.
