How Is That Possible?

Okay, I walked 4.5 miles a day in Disney and came back 3.5 pounds heavier. I got a Wii last week and began sweating it out almost every night and have dropped NO WEIGHT. For the most part I’ve made healthy choices in food (except last night – I had a nice hamburger with onion rings and a milkshake – what? I’m PMSing right now). Last night I spent 2 hours playing tennis and boxing on the Wii – had a nice sweat going. Weighed myself before going to bed. Got up this morning, and has .5 pound HEAVIER. WHAT? That’s not supposed to happen. I’m supposed to at least MAINTAIN but almost always should GO DOWN over night.

I just can’t think of what the problem is (my Wii session last night definitely worked off at least those milkshake calories). All I can think is that with all the exercise my body has gotten since May 24 (between Disney and the Wii), my body is now holding on to all the calories it’s getting to “use” for exercise? I don’t know – I really don’t know. But I lost more weight being lazy than I have since I went to Disney and got the Wii. I thought eating less and exercising more was supposed to help you LOSE? Not maintain or gain?

Very frustrated. Next Wednesday’s doctor appointment is NOT going to be a good one.

How much sodium was in your dinner last night? In addition to high sodium intake, PMS means water retention. I “gained” 6 pounds after a no-holds-barred overnight eating/drinking out of town recently, and “lost” the same 6 pounds a few days later.

I suspect there are two things at work here. I know you haven’t been religious about taking your weight-loss meds. And I’m not so sure you’ve been as faithful with watching the calories as you had been when you started the program. When you began, you ate practically nothing at home. Now I know you’ve eaten snacks (ice cream, candy, etc.) much more often than when you began the program. Those are just my observations. I know I’ve stopped losing weight and it’s because I’ve begun cheating and had ice cream, chips, popcorn, an occasional beer, etc. It’s amazing how quickly those things add up at our advanced ages. LOL

Beth – I suspect you are right. I had a sodium-heavy meal last night.

Marmie – you may be right. I noticed just this morning that when I flex my right bicep it is actually HARD – after only six days of playing Wii Tennis (for a total of about 10-15 hours).

Count me 3rd on the muscle weight thing. I didn’t lose any weight on the trip either, despite the walking/sweating/less eating although my pants felt looser after we got home. So I lost something if not pounds.

Denis – you are right. The Disney trip definitely messed up my med schedule and I have been able to get back on it with any regularity.

You are also right that I’ve been less diligent at home. I had stopped doing my 30-day commitments, but maybe I’ll start back up with them to help me become more conscientious.

I don’t want to be a bubble burster BUT it takes a tremendous amount of exercise to gain just 1 pound of muscle. You are gaining water weight, just from your dinner you mentioned in the post it is obvious that it’s water weight. Also, I love to Wii like everyone else but I run 5 miles a day 5 days a week plus I run with my recruit classes…that is what keeps me fit. You have to get to the gym and do 30 minutes of cardio at least 5 times a week…remember pain is weakness leaving the body and sweat is bliss šŸ™‚

Tara, I was thinking the same thing in the shower this morning. It can’t be muscle. The Wii is cardio exercise not strength training. We need to get a good eliptical machine for our house. That should be the next thing we save up for. I can’t believe I’m locked into my gym membership for life though. How is that legal? Do my heirs have to continue to make payments after I die?

Oh, I know I’m not gaining muscle playing the Wii. although my right bicep IS changing because of the way I play Wii Tennis. But I freely acknowledge that I’m doing cardio, not muscle building. And it IS cardio – when I play Wii Tennis my heart rate goes up, I sweat, and I get sore if I play for a very long time. All signs to me that I AM getting a workout.

Denis – *I* pay for your gym membership, so no, you don’t have to pay after you die. And nor do I. šŸ™‚ Actually, I think the contract runs out in November or December of this year, at which point you can renew or not renew.

And where would the elliptical go?

Interesting. I thought it was a lifetime membership. We pay something like $360/yr for my membership for me to use two pieces of equipment. If you had a membership it would be $600 a year. If we got an eliptical machine for $600 or less, it would make sense to go that route. We could fit that piece in our bedroom. Maybe slide the bed over a few inches and remove Cooper’s bed, which he rarely uses, and the cats use more than him and voila!

I’ve actually been thinking recently about reconfiguring the bedroom anyway – we’ll talk about the options tonight. The room is certainly BIG enough to house the elliptical, for sure. And I still have my “disney fund” accoutn set up with $$ from my paycheck automatically goes into that account. I’ll keep that auto transfer active and see what we have come November when your membership is up for renewal.
