Book: The Constant Princess

Yet another fictitious historical account from the Tudor era by Phillippa Gregory, one of my favorite historical writers. This time, Gregory focuses on Catherine of Aragon, who was Henry VIII’s first wife (and subsequently overtaken by the infamous Anne Boleyn).

A lot of people misunderstand Gregory’s intent in writing – she has made plain in interviews that she does not always tell ACCURATE histories, but opts to tell INTERESTING STORIES about real people. If I want to read biographies of Tudor royals, I buy Carolly Erickson books (she’s another great writer). If I want to read fluffy intriguing fictional versions I read Gregory. BIG difference and I know a lot of people complain about Gregory’s blatant disregard for historical fact in an attempt to create an interesting story.

But I don’t mind it – because I DO take the time to read Carolly Erickson’s studied analysis of the real people. So I’m able to separate fact from fiction well enough. And if anything, Gregory’s books make me even more interested in learning about the real person. Because of “The Constant Princess” I plan on finding a good biography on her to learn the real story of Katherine of Aragon.

Having said that, this book was awesome and if you have liked Phillippa Gregory in the past, you will surely like this one as well.
