Last night Denis hit up RedBox for a free movie (you can use the code HIGHLIFE if you want to get one for yourself this weekend). I was in the mood for a light movie, so we opted to get “Knocked Up.” I love Judd Apatow from his “Freaks and Geeks” days, and I love how he has slowly created this fraternity of actors who constantly work together. And they ALL showed up for “Knocked Up.”
Paraphrased from Amazon.com’s description:
A one-night stand between the utterly mismatched stoner Ben (Seth Rogen) and Alison (Katherine Heigl) results in pregnancy, and the two unite for mutual support–even though they barely know each other.
I had heard that the movie was pretty sophomoric and that the jokes were on the raunchy side, so I was prepared for that. What I wasn’t prepared for were the moments of sweetness delicately sprinkled throughout the amazingly lowbrow bits (seriously – this movie was VERY lowbrow). I should have known better though, because that’s Judd Apatow’s specialty. You have characters that are just over the edge of being believable but then he reigns them in and makes them completely human (well, some of them).
Apatow had a LOT of folks from his “Freaks and Geeks” days in this movie, which I loved. Jason Segal, Seth Rogan, Martin Starr (my favorite from “F&G”), James Franco (playing himself). He had Jay Baruchel from his “Undeclared” days (which also started Jason Segal and Seth Rogan) and Paul Rudd and Steve Carrell (playing himself) who were in “40 Year Old Virgin”. Apatow also brought new players into his stable – Jonah Hill, various “Saturday Night Live” people, and many many others.
I found myself laughing out loud many times during this movie – I couldn’t help myself. Sure, the characters (even the leads at times) were not the most likeable people most of the time, but their moments of humility, their moments of WANTING to change, were what made me come over to their side and begin rooting for them.
Will I buy this movie on DVD? I highly doubt it. But it was enjoyable and a nice Friday night diversion.
3 1/2 books on pregnancy out of five.
