Back when Denis and I were dating long-distance we relied a lot on letters to each other to move our relationship along. Talking on the phone was expensive (this was before cellphones got so cheap), and we only chatted online during the day because I didn’t have a computer to use at night. So mailing letters was the way to go. Every now and again I’d get a wonderful sweet and romantic letter from Denis, and I always looked forward to coming home to a new letter.
And once we met in person we were only seeing each other twice a month since he lived in New York while I was in Virginia, so I got a lot of I miss you letters which made me feel loved and treasured.
I think writing letters is important even now that we have emails so readily available. There’s something special about finding that envelope among the stack of bills, that when you open it it just brings a smile to your face, because someone took the time to write a note, put it in the envelope with a stamp and put it in a mailbox. Even that small thing is actually quite “major” when it comes to love and romance.
