The Modern High School’s Book Reading List

So a co-worker of mine has a son who is a junior in high school who had to pick a book from a reading list given to him by his teacher. An odd assortment of books, I did everything in my power to have him pick one particular book from the list:

  • The Beloved (Toni Morrison)
  • The Partner (John Grisham)
  • Ellen Foster (Kaye Gibbons)
  • Ender’s Game (Orson Scott Card)
  • Flowers for Algernon (Daniel Keyes)

Can you guess which one I recommended for a 16-year-old boy?

I’m happy to report he accepted my recommendation and begins reading the book this week. I know he’s gonna LOVE IT.

Wow, The Partner is my favorite Grisham book, but I’m surprised to see it on a high school reading list!

Yeah, I was surprised to see Grisham on there as well. Talk about the “easy way out” when it comes to reading for school.

I read Flowers for Algernon in 8th grade. Plus – Grisham? This sounds like a summer reading list!
We were reading Shakespeare & Homer waaaay back in 1991 when I was a junior…it’s sad what’s happening to the schools.

I know you must have picked Enders Game as it is a Fantastic Sci-Fi book for that age group!

Yeah, I’d pick Ender’s Game first. But I have a soft spot for Flowers for Algernon, too, from my junior high days.
