I’m Teaching Myself To Sew

So I’m teaching myself to sew. I’ve been messing around with my scraps of fleece from making blankets. I’ve made a little lopsided scarf for CootieGirl or CootieBoy to use this winter, and tonight I made a pillow. It’s not the best pillow in the world, but it’s my first one. So for that I’m very proud, considering I really don’t quite know what I’m doing AND I “slipstitched” the thing shut and it’s not half bad for a first attempt.

When I was doing the scarf, I found the fleece was REALLY stretchy (thus the lopsidedness of the final product). So I went online to find tips for sewing fleece, and read that pinning tissue paper to the edge along which you want to sew will help the fleece keep from stretching. So that’s what I did with this blanket. The main reason this pillow is bigger on one end than the other is that the scrap piece that I used was lopsided before I even got started – I didn’t bother trying to make a perfect rectangular pillow in that sense.

So anyway, I’m slowly getting more comfortable about my sewing, and will try to put the modest skillz to good use in a couple weeks to make a fleece blanket using some really crazy fleece that I ordered recently.

Hey, Jaynee, that it great! Before you know it you’ll graduate to window treatments!

Sewing is fun! I agree with Marmie – window treatments can be really easy, too (with a machine). Also handbags. I don’t attempt clothes anymore, except my son’s 1st birthday sailor suit.
