The Obligatory “Haircut” Post

Every Mommy blog has one. That post that comes along when precious offspring discover cutting shears and decide to try out a new hairstyle on themselves. Such was the case earlier tonight when I was downstairs keeping CootieBoy company. CootieGirl started screaming upstairs somewhere and I just figured that Denis had just lectured her about something or other. The screams continued as she came downstairs a few minutes later and into the room where I was. This is what I beheld:

The horror she felt at what she’d done:

The fear that she’d get yelled at by Mommy (hence the stinkeye):

The realization that she’d have to face her friends at daycare tomorrow:

The resignation that she’ll have to get a “big girl haircut” next week:

What was the funniest was that neither Denis nor I yelled at her, but she was MORTIFIED at the idea of going to daycare tomorrow. I’m not even kidding when I tell you that she said, “I can’t go to daycare or church tomorrow because they will laugh at me.”

I assured her that we could hide the damage by putting her hair into pigtails tomorrow and that we’d just ignore the excessively short bangs (which I evened out after these pictures were taken).

Poor CootieGirl! Well, it looks like she learned a quick
lesson! The surprising part is that she didn’t decide
to cut her bangs one day before the big Christmas photos!
    😉

Poor CootieGirl! But on the bright side she would look very cute
    with an angled bob!

Tracy – yes, I told her about the Big Girl Haircut and she burst into tears again. She LOVES LOVES LOVES her long hair even though she hates having it brushed. I have a hair appt next Tuesday night, but I’m going to let CootieGirl take that slot and let a stylist try and do something with it. But I fear the only solution will be chopping it off to chin length.

I feel so bad for sitting here laughing at her…but at the same
time feel so sorry for her. She looks so mortified!! Poor baby!!

I know you want it chopped off, but a good stylist will be able to keep the length in the back and still make it look good. Hope you are using a good stylist.

I’m using a great stylist, and I know she’ll recommend chopping it off. There’s a good handful of hair IN THE FRONT that is chin-length. The only other option is to do layer fringe from bang to end, and that’s very…1970s.

Hilarious!! So glad you captured this mortifying moment on film!

I am with Denis ~ try to have a layered fringe in front and then take the minimum off the back. She should also be able to do something to cut out more bangs soso that the short, short bangs are hidden by longer ones. It won’t be perfect but at least it won’t be quite as weird looking. Pony tails may be the style for the foreseeable future! Poor thing. “Vanity, thy name is Woman.” She’s joined our club rather early. 😉

I’ve already decided that we’re going to cut off CootieGirl’s hair to chin length and donate it to Locks of Love, a great organization that makes hairpieces for children who have lost their hair completely. I think it’s a great cause and CootieGirl can feel really good about doing such a nice thing for another little girl out there in the world.

For CootieGirl, her hair will grow back and it’ll still be just as beautiful.

Is that what CootieGirl wants? Glad that you decided that. Last time I checked, it’s still her hair, even if she isn’t skilled with the tools of the hair-cutting trade.

Denis, last time I checked you didn’t want me to attempt to reason with our 3-year-old, so why should I attempt to reason with our 4-year-old?

Her bangs will be all grown out to a normal length in about three weeks. However, the large chunk that she cut out of the side will take a bit longer (after all, she cut off a good 6-7 inches of length), so it makes more sense just to cut ALL her hair to that length rather than cut some funky fringe style that is not suitable for a 4-yr-old.

It’s just HAIR. It’ll grow back. Sheesh.

    Jen – I think it’ll be a dual-edged sword for her.

    1) She loves swinging her long hair and being all “princessy”, but

    2) She hates having her hair brushed or styled.

I’d much rather cut her hair short and get a break on #2 for a while as her hair grows back to #1.

I agree with you Jaynee. The shorter bob will be adorable and the short in front, longer fringe in back is a mullet for crying out loud! We can’t have that. 😉

Poor kid 🙁 I can remember doing the same thing when I was around her age. But at least it’s only hair and it will grow back.

Poor baby! You have a great attitude, Mama. I’d have been crying right along with her!

Everyone’s saying “It’s only hair. It will grow back.” If it will grow back, why are we bothering cutting it all off in the first place? LOL CootieGirl will always have a shoulder to cry on in me when she weeps at night over her short hair.

We are cutting it all off so it will look right. If we keep it the way it is now, she’ll have one side of her hair all one length, and the other side will start at chin length for the first couple inches back and then abruptly change to full length.

I’m thinking CootieGirl will be totally cute and princessy, swishing her short hair all day. After all, isn’t this the hairstyle she chose, by cutting it herself? 😉

I cut my bangs REALLY, REALLY short when I was about 8. Walked around the house wearing one of those 1980’s headbands to hide the botched hair-cutting job. Needless to say, that didn’t fool my mom for long. 🙂
