Miss CootieGirl’s First Trip to Marmie’s

In what will hopefully become the first of many trips to visit grandparents, tomorrow morning CootieGirl is going with Marmie on the long car-ride to Virginia where she will be doted on for almost two full weeks.

Pity we have to wait one more year before CootieBoy goes on such a trip. He’s infinitely more exciting (read: so joyously active it makes you want to take a nap just thinking about having to deal with it and wow wouldn’t it be awesome to have a kid-free break without having to fly on a plane to do so?). In any event, CootieGirl and Marmie have many things planned. Pool time at a friend’s house, a tea party, manicures at a local salon, a movie in an actual movie theater (I’ll be curious to know how THAT goes). So those events cover the first 2-3 days. I wonder how Marmie will fill CootieGirl’s time the other 6-7 days?

When I was younger I used to bounce back and forth during the summer to each grandparents’ house. I remember when I was a young teen (in the summer before 7th, 8th or 9th grade, maybe?) I had the best time at one grandmother’s house because we’d have some SERIOUS pool time at her town pool – like six hours a day, every day, pool time. And when we weren’t at the pool we were on her friend’s boat going waterskiing for a few hours. Ah, the good ol’ days. I had a killer tan that summer AND was a really good swimmer. If I recall my dress code properly for that summer (big BIG earrings in neon colors and oversized shirts with awful prints), it may have been the summer of 1983, which would be just before 9th grade. Or maybe 1984 just after. Definitely pre-Wham! era, but close enough to it to wear painfully ugly clothes (maybe it was more of a “Young Guns (Go For It)” Wham! year than a “Wake Me Up Before You Go Go” Wham! year).

I wonder if I can talk my parents until having an in-ground pool when they retire and build a house down south? My kids would LOVE IT and I wouldn’t complain either.

Totally sidetracked. Anyway, suffice to say that CootieGirl should have a really good time, even though we’ll miss her tremendously. But I also think CootieBoy will benefit from this two week break from his sister as he’ll get a lot of undivided attention from us while she’s gone.

Actually, she’ll be going to the pool with Uncle Beau at our community pool.

As for the summer you spent with Grandma at the pool – that was 1981, I think.
The year of Endless Love and the air traffic controllers strike. Our visit was extended by a week.

Because I don’t think we came out again until we moved out here in 1983. So maybe you’re talking about then, but you’d have been in HS then.

Your comments box throws me off, so I posted so that I could see what I wrote…

    To continue…

In 1981 you ended up with Grandma for 2 weeks and I was with Mom’s parents for 2 weeks. That was the summer I went to Myrtle Beach with Grandma and got blistered on the first day at the beach and spent the rest of the week in the Winnie reading Harlequin romances.

    Good times.

Maybe we can concentrate on getting CootieBoy potty trained in the days while CootieGirl is gone.

I have LOTS of things planned for our time together, so there won’t be any time for boredom. And, that is a big ‘no’ on the inground pool. Perhaps we can be hear a lake instead?
