What a bitter disappointment this Christopher Guest movie was! I love all things Guest – Spinal Tap, Waiting for Guffman, A Mighty Wind, etc. But this movie fell incredibly flat and not funny at all. All the regular cast members came back for this one – they are all familiar faces at this point. But for this movie, an actual script might have been more helpful.
Per Amazon’s description of the plot:
Three actors learn that their respective performances in the film “Home for Purim,” a drama set in the mid-1940s American South, are generating award-season buzz.
This one makes me wonder what Guest was thinking. The premise is SO promising, but the movie does NOT deliver. At all.
This one gets the big goose egg.
Yeah, I hated it too. Didn’t even finish it. Sad.
I’m with you — so disappointed! I kept waiting for it to get funny, and it never did.
My daughter suggested that it was because the characters didn’t really like who they were. You get the impression in the other mockumentaries that each character really loves him or herself. Or maybe the actors really don’t have much love for the Hollywood machine, whereas you can clearly see how much they adore community theatre, dog shows, folk music, and rock bands. 🙂 In Guest’s other films, he was poking gentle fun at things that he loves. I don’t get that impression with this movie.
