I tried to like this movie. I really did. I love Jenna Fisher (from “The Office”) and thought this could be a good movie since she wrote and directed this along with her husband, James Gunn, who also stars in the movie about a couple who want to help the homeless by giving them lollipops with original artwork and pithy advice on the wrappers.
For a truly independent made-for-$2000 it has promising, but after about 45 minutes I lost interest and turned it off (it didn’t help that I fell asleep, either). And the next day I had no desire to put it back in and finish it. That rarely happens.
Fisher does an admirable job – the directing is fine, and she used lots of personal things to help save on the budget (lots of old photos and videos of Jenna and James together which are legit since they are married). And I loved the cameo by Jason Segal (of “HIMYM”) and Linda Cardellini (of “ER”). Another great scene was their pitch to a potential financial backer about how their lollipops can help the homeless. But a few great scenes here and there don’t make a good movie.
And this just wasn’t a good movie. I’m all about independent movies. I’m a *huge* fan of Jenna Fisher. I like off-the-cuff, make-it-up-as-we-go movies like “Waiting for Guffman” or “Spinal Tap”. But this just doesn’t live up to that caliber of movie despite being promoted for that genre.
Pass on this one.
1 1/2 stars out of 5.
The problem with the movie is it was one really long joke. They never advanced the plot. Hmmmmm…what plot?
